The least you can say about Taylor Hicks is that he's not like prior American Idol champs: he already had almost a decade of gigging in bars when he won the fifth season in 2006, complete with songwriting experience, an ability to play harmonica and guitar, and a pair of self-released albums. On his major-label debut, the Silver Fox settles in a plush, comfortable sound framed by vintage-sounding soul and R&B, as well as classic rock--it's comfort food for the ears. The one thing that's not here is Hicks's first single, "Do I Make You Proud." Other than that, the songs are a well-balanced mix of oldies (Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat"), newbies that sound like oldies (Rob Thomas's "Dream Myself Awake," Bryan Adams's "The Right Place"), the obligatory Diane Warren ballad ("Places I've Been"), and some party-fun anthems ("The Runaround," "Heaven Knows").

This last track actually is one of two paying tribute to Hicks's patron saint, Ray Charles--it references the piano riff from "What'd I Say," while "The Right Place" was originally written for Charles. Clearly, there are worse people to look up to.

Katharine McPhee has a cloudless voice and a warm, wide-eyed Alice in Wonderland quality that won her swarms of fans on American Idol's fifth season--if Simon Cowell had a ready antonym for "ghastly," there's little room for doubt about which contestant he would have applied it to. While debates over whether McPhee's considerable grace and talent should have won her the TV competition rage on across the Idol-viewing landscape, one thing's certain: she's made a debut album good enough to render such determinations meaningless. Katharine McPhee is an R&B-leaning pop disc that pulls the urgency and tenderness out of her voice and pins it smack in the center of each song. The slickly produced opener "Love Story" displays a certain swagger, and "Not Ur Girl" and "Open Toes" follow it up with still more spunk and attitude (something some McPhans asked to see more of on AI). If there's a crisp, smartly maneuvered Christina Aguilera-meets-Beyoncé-and-Mariah sensibility at work in those songs, the ballads belong to McPhee alone. Thankfully, Elliott Yamin's in great voice on lead single "Movin' On," a kiss-off to a fickle lover that could just as easily be interpreted as a message to all those major-label execs who failed to snatch him up after his third-place finish on Idol's fifth season. The song's got a '70s, smooth-jazzy vibe that vaguely reminds me of "Just the Two of Us," but I don't think it would be totally out of place on today's pop radio, either. All in all, a very wise choice, especially considering the other two Elliott tracks being previewed at AOL include the far less hook-y "You Are the One" and a drippy inspirational ballad called "Find a Way". - Michael Slezak

The rumors were true--as a showcase for raw vocal chops, American Idol has gotten better every season. The good news for buyers of American Idol Season 5 Encores, then, is that to a one, each of the dozen tracks collected here is easy on the ears: Kellie Pickler's Patsy Cline re-do, "Walkin' After Midnight," clip-clops along with a pleasing North Carolina sweetness. Melissa McGhee proves she was voted off too early with the belt-a-holic opener "What About Love," and Kevin Covais makes a case for his inclusion on a future Disney soundtrack with the wistful "When I Fall in Love." If this disc launches thousands Web discussions, though--and it probably already has--it'll be for its final-fiver selections.

Paris Bennett's "Midnight Train to Georgia" singlehandedly snaps preconceived notions about the show's talent caliber, even if you're not familiar with the spunky 17-year-old singing it. Chris Daughtry's "Wanted Dead or Alive" may not have a lot on Bon Jovi's version, but it showcases his rock-god pipes to maximum benefit. By far the best vocal arrives on track nine, though: Elliott Yamin's "Moody's Mood for Love" outshines everything around it. If Taylor Hicks fans are pleased with his straightforward, husky-voiced rendition of "Takin' it to the Streets" here, chances are they're equally glad he was handed the crown. But for some, Elliott's track may be strong enough to incite cries for a first-ever AI recount. - Tammy La Gorce

Would American Idol winner Carrie Underwood have landed a major-label recording contract without winning the hugely popular television contest? Probably. The big-voiced Oklahoman has the pipes, the look, the pedigree, and, most important, the emotional resonance to sustain a professional career. As an investment in her future, her label eschewed the easy path in putting out an album to take advantage of her publicity, going for a name producer, Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Lonestar), to handle half the tracks. It also solicited material from the same top songwriters (Diane Warren, Brett James, Troy Verges, Rivers Rutherford) who stock albums by Hill, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, and Wynonna. "Jesus, Take the Wheel," the hit first single, shows off the best of Underwood's power vocals, while the sexy rocker "We're Young and Beautiful" pulls her out of her ballad-heavy comfort zone, and her autobiographical "I Ain't in Checotah Anymore" bolsters her authenticity. If the young performer oversings on occasion (the overwrought bonus track, "Inside Your Heaven"), and settles for too many generic themes, she still surprises in her ability to go head-to-head with country’s reigning females. Will Underwood really survive to be a contender for the Martina throne? Let's just say that American Idol judges and voters picked the right contestant. Bo Bice - The Real Thing

Bo Bice, American Idol darling and Alabama babe magnet, had to have known he was taking a risk in naming his debut full-length The Real Thing. Up until now, those who weren't fans of the show and were introduced to Bice's heart-on-his-sleeve brand of southern rock through either his fall 2005 guest spot on Carlos Santana's All That I Am or his chart-topping turn on the single "Inside Your Heaven," also from 2005, may have been tempted to write him off as reality-show riffraff. The Real Thing--thanks in no small part to producer Clive Davis as well as Bice-boosters Richie Sambora, Jon Bon Jovi, Chad Kroeger (Nickelback), and Ben Moody (Evanescence)--redeems the hirsute, hard-charging rocker. Bice steps lively through a cavalcade of soaring guitars and top-drawer hooks, and he doesn't skimp on the belting--hear it on the full-flame lament "Nothing Without You" and also "Remember Me," an insistent rant sunk chest-deep in sincerity. If Bice sounds less earthy here than he did on the show--onstage he recalled the singer from the '60s band the Grass Roots to eerie effect at times--few will be disappointed. This is modern music with a Southern-man twist made irresistible by a bare-it-all guy who means it. The real thing, in other words. - Tammy La Gorce

American Idol Season 4 - The Showstoppers

The Showstoppers indeed. All of these American Idol hopefuls sound terrific on this album; often a lot better than they did singing the songs live. But, that's okay, it's a fun retrospective of American Idol's best season yet. My favorite, Constantine Maroulis' "My Funny Valentine" shows the most originality and showcases his versatility. It's probably the only truly original presentation on the album. However, Nadia Turner's take on "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" really is breathtaking none the less; never did understand why she was knocked off so quickly. The group song, "When You Tell Me That You Love Me" is a nice song, but Vonzell Solomon is a bit too overpowering - Deborah Galante

I absolutely loved this CD. I feel that Fantasia took her time with this album and she was able to produce a number of very good songs. I loved the fact that she toned the screaming and relied on her actual voice to sell the songs. Her voice is beautiful. I feel that she believes in what she is singing and this is felt throughout the album. I liked this album much better then her first album. I really hope this album does well on the charts but even if it doesn't...oh well...her album was still good. And for those that are judging this album on her first single...you need to listen to the whole album and then judge. Diana DeGarmo's definitely is a powerful vocalist. If i did not get it wrong, she recorded this album at the age of 17. Years to come she will for sure be a really really impressive singer! This album did showcase the young energy carrying in her and contains some ballad to smoothen more this entire album. She handle both slow and fast songs just as well. The most outstanding tracks in this album to me would be Cardboard Castles, Emotional, Dreams, Boy Like You and Don't Cry Out Loud (A Better version in my own opinion) . With her great personality and voice, she'll fly high! Her potential is going to be FULLY shown in her second album. I'm looking forward to that! Love & Life is a wonderful disc with a music for everyone. Scandalous and Appreciate will satisfy anyone who craves a strong beat, while Anything and More cater to the grown and sexy. It is rare to find a disc where you can easily pick 6 favorite songs. Latoya London's voice shines on every cut, and her vocals and song selection far surpass her performances on AI. Contrary to other reviews, I think that the production is wonderful; not overdone like most of today's music. I had the pleasure of meeting her after a performance in NYC and she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She greeted anyone who approached her, gave hugs, let us take pics with a camera phone, and left us feeling like she was our favorite little sister; an awesome spirit and a wonderful talent. George Huff - Miracles

George Huff will be remembered for his infectious smile as one of the finalists in the third season of American Idol. George's happy-go-lucky demeanor made him one of the fan favorites. George's first CD is actually a EP of Christmas tunes that makes one wish it had been a full LP. George's soulfully smooth voice and Gospel influence bring true hear to these seasonal songs. His silky voice reminds me of a young Luther Vandross. "Silent Night' is a particular favorite and "Go Tell it on the Mountain" could be a gospel classic for Mr. Huff. If I have one complaint its that the album is just two short and I would like to seen a couple more upbeat songs. Still, a wonderful debut for Geroge Huff! - Tim Janson

What can I say except that this new William Hung CD is one for the ages! Just save this one for when you've got the top down on a hot summer day, at the beach. It just puts you in an indescribable summer mood! Just crank up his amazing version of "Surfin' USA", and heads will definitely turn your way, with smiles from ear to ear! Brian Wilson must be proud! His smooth, melodious crooning will bring tears to your eyes...trust me! Mr. Hung has a knack for making a song his own, and makes it barely recognizable in the process. I was considering putting some Sinatra into the CD player on Valentine's Day, but I think this one will achieve the magic mood, with all due respect to 'Ol Blue Eyes. A definite Desert Island Classic! What else can I say about this one...hmmm...oh yes, if you actually take this review seriously, you're probably the same kind of person who also takes this CD seriously and pans it! Come on!! It's a novelty CD which isn't supposed to be taken seriously! And for those of you resentful that someone who "sings" like this makes money off of it, lighten up!! There's just something about his cracked crooning, goofy looks, and his apparent eagerness to make an arse of himself that's so appealing to so many ears! So get used to it -- not everything is supposed to be listened to in a serious way, and if you think this CD sucks because the sound of his voice could peel the paint off a wall, you're just not getting it!! Depending on your sense of humor, William Hung's 15 minutes of fame on one 2004 episode of American Idol were either a joke or the high point of the show's season. Tone-deaf, karaoke-trained, and a far cry from the series' polished and trendy wannabe pop stars, Hung was booted halfway through his classic cover of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs." Inspiration, his first (and possibly last) CD, gives his legion of fans a chance to hear him in his entirety. Basically, it's Hung with karaoke background music, warbling through classics such as "Hotel California," "Rocket Man," and "Y.M.C.A." A few "inspirational thought" tracks are interspersed between the songs, giving you insight into the UC Berkeley student's self-confidence and enthusiasm. A bonus DVD even contains new footage and interviews of Hung in action. There are plenty of classic, imaginative novelty records out there--consider the Shaggs, Lucia Pamela, and Mrs. Miller--but this isn't one of them. Hung's backing music is too bland and, after a few tracks, the joke wears a little thin. But if you must hear more of this unlikely American Idol, here's your chance. - Jason Verlinde

Although only 17, John Stevens has a stunning future with the Great American Songbook...and this brilliant debut album is one shining example. Thanks to Steve Tyrell and David Foster's superb production, Bob Mann's wonderful arrangements, and the just-right musical accompaniment (happily NO BIG BAND in sight), John has created a winning lineup of standards (both old and new), starting with "Come Fly with Me" and concluding with "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." I was not aware of Maroon 5's "This Love" until I heard John's heartfelt rendition - just perfect! And "Here, There and Everywhere" is a marvelous Beatles song that is perfect in a jazzy setting.

There is no need for me to add to what most of the other reviewers have already written, but this CD is a winner! And with careful handling, John Stevens has the talent to rival the likes of Michael Buble, Peter Cincotti, Renee Olstead and other up-and coming young vocal stylists for years to come. - B. J. Lane

American Idol season 3: Greatest Soul Classics

American Idol Season 3 was by far the most interesting season of the three so far, not in the least for its line-up of talents, in the Top12 as well as those who didn't not make the cut for one reason or another. Following the tradition set by past AIs, the producers have once again come up with a compilation of songs to showcase the vocal abilities of the Top 12 contestants.

As in the television program, on this CD, the better ones shine while the lesser talents just scrape by (but barely). George Huff , Jennifer Hudson and LaToya London produce the most polished works, while Fanatasia, Diana Degarmo and Jasmine Trias show why they are worthy of reaching the upper echelons of the competition. The rest of the line-up basically just make up the numbers, with Matt Rogers, Amy Adams and Camille Velasco doing slightly better then the other three.

The one thing I would like to comment in defense of the 'lesser' performances is that it may seem a tad unfair to highlight just one genre of music, in this case soul music. Clearly, some of them are good singers who might have done better in other genres like country (Amy Adams) and hip-hop (Camille Velasco). As such I would approach this CD as merely an introduction of the Top12 and would hold off judgement of their actual talent until the release of their respective solo works. - Dr Gan

A Thousand Different Ways, the follow-up to Clay Aiken's chart-burning debut Measure of a Man, trots out the kind of material a fleet-voiced former American Idol contestant can't help having a field day with: Aiken's version of Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" is bathed in a smoothness that renders it arguably better than the original; his step into Celine Dion's shoes for "Because You Loved Me" sees nary a stumble (no easy feat, considering it's a vocal obstacle course of a song); and his cover of Paul Young's '80s classic "Everytime You Go Away" comes across as a clean-sounding, much-needed update.

More proof that Aiken ain't fakin' when it comes to being a stylish interpreter comes courtesy of his convincing carry-off of Dolly Parton's sweet "Here You Come Again," but where he'll earn the most merit points for this disc is with its four originals--"A Thousand Days" especially. Aiken has the kind of voice that makes listeners want to scoot close to the speaker. I bought his album and I have to say I think its the best FIRST album of any American Idol thus far. Any song he sings that broadcasts his voice range just awes me. I really like this cd. It's missing some super super songs, but there are a few great ones here though. I love One Side, Get U Loose and Make Ya Feel Beautiful. Vocally, Ruben Studdard sounds amazing as always, physically he is looking better, but the one thing stopping him from being a much bigger sensation is the material he has. As someone with such an outstanding voice, he needs better song writers to really come up with some gems for him to release and make him the star he should be. He's so talented, but I just don't feel like there are any major hits on this cd. The songs that are good are just good. If anybody ought to be hugging the velvet teddy bear for releasing I Need an Angel, the follow up to the Idol 2 champ's 2003 Soulful debut, it's the top brass in the gospel music biz. Not only does Ruben Studdard give the genre its props by reinvestigating his roots and turning in an entire disc's worth of well-loved renditions, he also, by virtue of his celebrity, will spawn a new audience of secular listeners for the music. Because to hear this stuff--whether you were raised in the church or outside it--is to love it. The spiritual build-up starts with a light touch: Studdard lays his impeccable musical timing and Luther Vandross-like pipes all over the R. Kelly-penned title track, an anthem that recalls Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly."

Later come gospel-soul hybrids ("Goin' Up Yonder"), spiritual ballads ("Center of My Joy," the Marvin Winans-penned "Restoration"), gorgeously interpreted traditional numbers ("Amazing Grace" and "Shout to the Lord") and a single twirl-toward-the-pulpit, free-your-demons Alabammy howler ("Fix It, Jesus," featuring the preacher Harvey Watkins, Jr.). Capping a disc that for an artist less blessed could have been inaccessible, alienating, or worse, is a Studdard original: "Don't You Give Up" borrows a hook from the Jackson 5, but it's Studdard we hope will carry on, be it as smooth R&B crooner or a mainstream spreader of spiritual inspiration. - Tammy La Gorce

The first full-length effort from second-season American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is an unassuming album that will surely please his fans. Studdard works in the vein of mainstream R&B crooners like Luther Vandross; here, he even covers "Superstar," the Leon Russell/Bonnie Bramlett song associated with Vandross. Other familiar material includes a close, if foreshortened, copy of Al Green’s version of "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart," and the standard "For All We Know," so memorably sung by Billie Holiday on Lady in Satin. A fair bit of time is spent making sure we know that despite his success, Ruben hasn’t changed. Indeed, he comes off as modest and charming; as for electrifying, he’s less so. As a CD that could’ve easily pandered much more to the whims of casual TV viewers, though, Soulful is a perfectly acceptable debut. - Rickey Wright

Josh Gracin's has such a beautiful voice. So natural and perfect for country. I expect huge things from him in the future. His debut could pave the way for him becoming one of the greats like Kenny or Keith. His first single "I Want to Live" is so catchy and fun, it's the perfect song to sing along to in the car with the windows down. "Nothin' to Lose" is such a fun song and shows you that he has what it takes to be a country star. My personal favorite "Brass Bed"(Stay With Me) is a beautiful love song that will be stuck in your head for days. Kimberley Locke - One Love

Apologies to Clay and Ruben, but if anybody should have had American Idol 2 on lock it was Kimberley. Kimberley Locke, that is, whose debut cracks the combination to her creamsicle-smooth vocal chops and coughs up a few surprises. Most important--and most often missing from the recorded dabblings of her AI cohorts--is a sense of restraint. K-Lo, as fans call her, doesn't muck up her songs with check-me-out vocal trickery. She opts instead for straight-up, bells-and-whistles-free singing, and with a voice as honest and earthy as hers it pays. She nails R&B-slanted selections like "It's Alright" and "Without You," the all-the-makings-of-a-classic love song performed with Clay (Aiken, who, she reports in these liner notes, she now counts as a close friend). If there's a misstep, it's the production on rocker "Wrong," which is, entirely, an attempt to copy the funky gimmickry of Kelly Clarkson's post AI chart-topper "Miss Independence." That bummer aside, best about One Love is the promise it displays in the songwriting department: Locke claims co-writer credit on the back-to-basics R&B lament "You've Changed," this CD's strongest, most convincingly cool track. - Tammy La Gorce

Carmen Rasmusen was never given the chance she deserved on AI. This doesn't mean that one can't be objective and give her CD a listen, which I did. I bought it immediately! This girl is a handful of the AIs who have really surpassed the bad rap they were given on that God awful program. Josh Gracin and RJ Helton are the others. This CD is excellent and my favorite song on it is "Photograph". At least this young lady has charm and dignity.....and she is not exploiting herself just to do what sells. To say not to give her a chance just because of her past AI performances is like God telling us he will not forgive us our sins when we do wrong. What a mess we would be in if that were true!!

American Idol Season 2: All Time Classic American Love Songs

Interested in visiting your favorite contestants from the second season of American Idol? Then this is the album for you, but be forewarned that something is lost in the translation from the small screen to the compact disc. Simon Cowell's scathing comments and Paula Abdul's head tossing add to the human drama; without those visual embellishments, the recorded version falls flat. Sure this is a talented bunch, but the material is mundane, with few of the finalists straying from the traditional arrangements. But when they do, it's sometimes worse. Ruben Stoddard's rendition of the Carpenters hit "Superstar" reeks of misplaced sincerity. The best cut on the disc is Kimberly Caldwell's throaty cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which gives the song some well-needed grit. And while Julia Demato's voice is no match for Etta James's full-bodied version of "At Last," Demato gives the classic a fetching kittenish spin. - Jaan Uhelszki

I had heard a couple of Jim Verraros's songs on the internet and loved them, so I ordered the CD without a second thought. I was very pleased with nearly the entire collection. There is really only one song on the album that I don't enjoy. The rest are excellent. Very fun, extremely hot, sexy, beautiful music. I was a little nervous about how good it would be. I tend to be a harsher critic of artist who are in the family, I expect more. Jim delivered. You're not going to find a bunch of songs dealing with how hard it is to be gay, coming out, discrimination, yada, yada, yada. This music if simply fun, enjoyable, and celebrates being who you are and enjoying it, embracing it, and flaunting it. Finally! Thank you Jim! Not only that, but the music is quality. Who'd have EVER thought RJ Helton would've made such a GREAT album? I certainly didn't, and he certainly proved me wrong. I was never a fan of him on American Idol. I rooted for him to get voted off along with Jim Verraros and A.J. Gill since the very beginning. His stage presence wasn't very good, and his voice rarely complimented the songs he chose, though he did have a good voice. After hearing this CD, though, my opinion has totally changed-and I find RJ to have more potential than other contestants who placed even higher than him in other seasons of AI.

RJ's R&B vibe took me aback at first. 'Even If' has become one of my favorite songs of his, with a catchy chorus and great vocals. The song tells of his relationship with God and I allows me to strengthen my religious relationship with the Lord as well, in the privacy of my own home without people judging me. I was also surprised with "My Devotion", "Freedom", and "Why don't we pray?", all three venturing out for a hip hop sound, even including some good old religious rappers. The vibe of the overall CD remains fun and unique-even with slower songs such as "Even If", "Delicate Child" and "Missing Me" (an almost more gospel sounding song). "Canto de Amor" ("Love Song" in Spanish AKA: Track 3) proves to be an added bonus, and gives way to RJ's latin vibe, adding to the diversity of the CD. - Lubug "Lu"

Tamyra Gray - The Dreamer

The Dreamer sets out to prove that the uproar over Tamyra Gray's too-early American Idol dismissal was justified, and mostly it succeeds. Several of these 13 tracks sound radio-ready--especially the sultry "Legend" and the show-offy, booty-shaking opener "Star"--while others simply underscore what millions of armchair talent scouts already know: even saddled with an ill-fitting genre, like the cliche-studded rocker "Faces," Tamyra will sing her way out of it. The record is in no way perfect--its surf through the musical-styles spectrum leaves listeners with the impression they're the subjects of an at-home experiment, albeit a pleasant one, and its lyrics could use a hearty shakedown from the trite police--but all told Tamyra nails a neat trick here, and that is to exalt the degree to which all ex-Idol hopefuls ought to be taken seriously. She pulls up the pack by dint of pure vocals and a poured-dry heart, and for that even Simon should shower her with props.

American Idol Greatest Moments

"American Idol: Greatest Moments" is the companion CD to the talent show TV program that ran in 2002. The CD has 15 tracks: four performances by contest winner Kelly Clarkson (including her performances of the original songs "A Moment Like This" and "Before Your Love"), 2 performances by runner-up Justin Guarini, one solo apiece from each of the rest of the top ten contestants, and one group performance of "California Dreamin'."

It's interesting to hear these vocal performances stripped of some of the other elements that made the TV show so memorable (and occasionally annoying): the hosts' silly banter, the judges' comments, and the shamelessly manipulative psychodrama. And most of these vocal performances are really great. Justin Guarini shows that his voice can stand alone without his oft-commented upon mop of hair. Similarly, Nikki McKibbin's full-bodied rendition of "Piece of My Heart" triumphs without the show's visual trappings. But the best performance on the disc is given by Tamyra Gray; "A House Is Not a Home" really shows off her rich, powerful voice. Bring on the solo album, Tamyra! And it's fun to try to identify each contestant during the brief solo parts on "California Dreamin'." If you loved the TV show, don't miss the CD. - Michael J. Mazza

If anybody out there has doubts about Justin Guarini's vocal talents, they'll be silenced after listing to "Condition of My Heart" for the first time. WOW! That is one POWERFUL voice!! One could also say the same thing after listening to "Thinking Of You", "I Saw Your Face", "How Will You Know" ... it just never ends!! Two songs that stands out, though, is his interesting rendition of "Get Here" (the popular song that Oleta Adams made famous) and his phenomenal duet, "Timeless", that he did with Kelly Clarkson. It's too bad this album never got promoted the way that it should've been. Who knows how many copies would've been sold if it had been given a fair shot? Sadly, it wasn't, and barely anybody heard about it. In any case, I felt I got my money's worth when I purchased my copy. I listen to it all the time. It never gets boring. Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway

Kelly Clarkson could have played her American Idol-propelled career much differently, languishing in the role of dippy ingénue or shunting her musical development by leaning too heavily on overnight stardom. Instead she dug in her heels and allowed good sense (or a good manager) to steer, and somewhere Simon Fuller and the rest of the TV gang ought to be smiling. Credit Breakaway, which couldn't be more aptly titled--the sophomore effort represents a seismic split from the thin if pretty debut, Thankful. Here we encounter Clarkson as superstar, with the humility that made her likable on the first disc tucked tightly under her arm. First single and leadoff track "Breakaway" topped the pop charts on arrival, and its rock-friendly thumps, dips, and rolls don't wear out their welcome. Instead,they blend into the firestorm of beats and guitars that is "Since U Been Gone," another shout-it-out rocker.

Those songs set the tone for the rest of the disc in all its fury: The innocence is long gone, "Addicted" and "Hear Me" say. The big, expressive voice ringed by the occasional high-pitch trill--the one that prompted millions to get behind her on Idol--doesn't dip entirely off the radar, though. On "Where Is Your Heart" and the stunning live closer "Beautiful Disaster," it's there in full force--a hint, maybe, that despite the wide, smart career step Breakaway represents, her fans come first.

Kelly Clarkson - Thankful

Kelly Clarkson, the toothsome winner of Fox TV's first American Idol competition shows that her prime-time win was no fluke. She blithely skips through octaves and genres like a seasoned pro, belting out power ballads like hooky "Low" and the Diane Warren-penned "Some Kind of Miracle," with the aplomb of Pat Benatar in her prime. Clarkson tackles the neo-gospel "Anytime" without flinching, then shows some dirty street cred as she growls through "Miss Independent," a song she penned with Christina Aguilera. But Miss Independent would be a gross misnomer; despite the fact Clarkson co-wrote four of the album's tunes.

Clarkson not only had uber record exec/executive producer Clive Davis at her disposal, but an arsenal of producers and songwriters to make sure she didn't make a creative misstep. Despite Clarkson's sublime vocal talents, excessive gloss at times overwhelms the quirky charm and personality she displayed on Idol.
